Solar PV takes the lead in Spain''s installed power
According to data from Red Eléctrica, solar photovoltaic (PV), with a total capacity of 32,043 MW, has surpassed wind power (32,007
Spain shines brightly as Europe's utility-scale solar energy leader, according to new data from Global Energy Monitor.
Spain's southern and central regions—particularly Andalusia, Extremadura, and Castilla-La Mancha—are solar energy hotspots due to high irradiance levels and available land. Wind power is another pillar of Spain's renewable energy mix. The country is the second-largest producer of wind energy in Europe, following Germany.
Spain requires more investments in grid infrastructure and additional storage facilities, like batteries to provide backup power, said Federico Santi, a senior analyst at Eurasia Group. “So they're almost a victim of their own success,” he said. There are also calls for more investment in critical energy infrastructure beyond renewable energy.
In some ways, Spain's solar energy boom is a victim of its own success. In spring and autumn, the sun is still strong enough to maximise solar output, but mild temperatures mean consumers have no need for things like air conditioning or heating.
