Standards for Flow Batteries
This article, therefore, provides an overview of standardization activities and important standards for flow batteries, whereby no claim to completeness can be made due to the quantity of
Flow batteries are an important technology to provide long-duration energy storage and on-demand energy. In 2025, Battery Council International launched the Flow Batteries North America Conference in partnership with the FBIG and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Long life cycle: flow batteries have a significantly longer lifespan compared to many other battery technologies. This reduces the need for frequent replacements, minimizing waste and environmental impact. Recyclable components: many components of flow batteries, such as the tanks and pumps, can be easily recycled.
Flow battery developers must balance meeting current market needs while trying to develop longer duration systems because most of their income will come from the shorter discharge durations. Currently, adding additional energy capacity just adds to the cost of the system.
This technology strategy assessment on flow batteries, released as part of the Long-Duration Storage Shot, contains the findings from the Storage Innovations (SI) 2030 strategic initiative.
