Williamsdale Battery Energy Storage System
This project enhances energy security and reliability, storing renewable energy to power one-third of Canberra during peak demand. Learn about its impact, development, and community benefits.
With the capacity to store enough renewable energy to power one-third of Canberra for two hours during peak demand periods, the project is a crucial component of the ACT government's Big Canberra Battery initiative. Eku Energy has established an innovative revenue swap arrangement with the ACT government, ensuring mutual benefits for both parties.
Installation is underway on behind-the-meter batteries at nine sites. The Big Canberra Battery project will deliver an ecosystem of batteries across the ACT to ensure that our electricity grid remains stable. The Big Canberra Battery project includes the installation of: installation of behind-the-meter batteries at nine government sites.
This stored energy will be used to support our electricity grid. The Big Canberra battery transformer was delivered to the Williamsdale site in early September 2025. The transformer ensures electricity stored in the battery is converted to the correct voltage to be safely supplied to the grid.
In most cases, BESS units will use lithium-ion battery technology to make this possible. The battery system will draw power from the grid to charge the battery and store the energy for later use. When there is a power draw, the systems work together with the grid to dispatch emission-free, quiet, and instant power.
