5G network deployment and the associated energy consumption
At present, the typical power and peak power of a base station are about 6 kW and 9 kW, respectively, and they will increase to 14 kW and 19 kW with the application of the
“A 5G base station is generally expected to consume roughly three times as much power as a 4G base station. And more 5G base stations are needed to cover the same area,” -IEEE Spectrum, 5G's Waveform Is a Battery Vampire
The European 5G Observatory tracks progress in 5G infrastructure deployment across the EU and other regions worldwide according to base stations deployment, edge nodes and infrastructure sharing agreements. The simulation results show that 700 MHz and 26 GHz will play an important role in 5G deployment in the UK, which allow base stations to meet short-term and long-term data traffic demands respectively.
To achieve gigabit speeds, the plan with 5G is to have it operate at very high frequencies of 24-26 Gigahertz. For this reason, 5G requires millions of new so-called “small cells,” for example, transmitters in lampposts. Billions of new wireless devices will soon be available worldwide. All of the above consumes electricity.
