Lithium-Sourcing Roadmap for India
Beijing has adopted a three-fold strategy to secure lithium supply by 1) increasing foreign investment in overseas mines, 2) leveraging the Belt and Road Initiative to forge partnerships
India is expected to see a cumulative demand of 600-900 GWh of lithium batteries by 2032, driven by electric mobility and energy storage needs. The country imported $3.59 billion worth of lithium-ion batteries in FY 2023, with over 100 companies engaged in battery pack manufacturing.
There are 100+ lithium battery pack manufacturing companies in India supplying batteries to EV, power electrics, and stationary storage markets in India. With the Government's support under the ACC-PLI scheme 30 GWH Lithium-Ion Cell production has been awarded to 3 companies and another 10 GWh is in tendering stage.
The report can support several Indian ministries, state-owned enterprises, such as Khanij Bidesh Limited (KABIL), as well as industry actors in India seeking to establish a presence in the global lithium supply chain.
India's geostrategic allies and competitors have long recognized the importance of lithium in maintaining their industrial competitiveness and have taken steps to secure access to lithium resources through direct investments in overseas mines and long-term supply agreements, as well as setting up processing and refining capabilities.
