Austrian PV: Storage Must Grow Fivefold in Six
PVTIME – PV Austria has released a key study providing a systematic assessment of the storage capacity required by its power
Austria's solar energy sector is poised for a significant transformation as the government updates its subsidy guidelines to incentivize more power purchase agreements (PPAs) for solar photovoltaic (PV) projects.
By enabling PV systems with PPAs to receive additional subsidies, the Austrian government is facilitating easier access to financing for developers of new projects. The revised guidelines are part of Austria's broader strategy to transition to a low-carbon economy and achieve its renewable energy targets.
The ministry highlighted Europe's technological edge in inverters—critical for grid integration of PV systems—and battery storage, noting these sectors “align with Austria's strategic priorities to strengthen domestic supply chains and reduce reliance on third-country imports.”
Curtailment is a significant problem in Austria, with independent transmission system operator Austrian Power Grid reporting that the country curtailed 57.4GWh of electricity in 2024, and that in the first 29 days of 2025 alone, a further 4.8GWh of power was curtailed.
