Future wind and solar energy projects in Mexico will be required to colocate battery energy storage systems equivalent to 30% of their capacity, a senior government official told the Senate on Tuesday.
A month after India introduced an energy storage mandate for renewable energy plants and China scrapped its own, Mexico has stepped forward with an ambitious 30% capacity requirement, alongside plans to add a further 574 MW of batteries by 2028.
Mexican legislation, however, neither defines nor regulates Storage. There are few references in the current legislation to the activity, no specific regulatory body oversees its development and there are no stipulations regarding the need to obtain any authorisation from the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE).
The Powin- Monterrey Microgrid – Battery Energy Storage System was developed by Plus Power. The project is owned by Arroyo Energy Investment Partners (100%). The key applications of the project are frequency & voltage regulation and spinning reserve services.
