China-based BYD Energy Storage has signed a contract with Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) for the world's largest grid-scale energy storage project. The contract signed between the two firms is for a capacity of 12.5 GWh energy storage project. The project – combined with the earlier delivered 2.6 GWh project – now amounts to a massive 15.1 GWh.
Riyadh, the Kingdom's capital, is undergoing rapid urbanization, with projects like the Riyadh Metro and King Abdullah Financial District driving energy demand. In January 2025, Saudi Arabia connected its largest BESS, a 2 GWh system, to the grid, significantly enhancing Riyadh's energy infrastructure.
BYD Energy Storage and SEC have finalised a deal to roll out 12.5GWh of new grid-scale battery storage, making it the largest project of its kind in the world. Together with an earlier 2.6GWh project, the total capacity under their partnership now stands at a record 15.1GWh.
